Lombok Chillout

Where to stay and surf in Lombok

Last year I got to check out Lombok on a pretty spontaneous trip. I had five days off so I packed my bags and left Perth with my partner to explore the island.

Lombok is quite small and compared to most places in Bali still very behind in the tourism sector which is quite refreshing. It gives you a better chance to fully immerse yourself in the Indonesian culture.

The best season is from March to October.

Where to Stay:

During our time in Kuta we stayed at beautiful Bombora Bungalow. Ideally located only a few minutes walk from Kuta Beach (Lombok) and various restaurants and shops this place didn’t disappoint. Each bungalow has their own private ensuite with a communal swimming pool in the middle. The staff was very friendly and welcoming and made our stay very comfortable. Since Kuta Lombok is quite a track away from the airport, the in house Airport Shuttle service was super convenient. Another big plus, Bombora Bungalow is very clean and has warm water showers! 🙂

Where to surf
Seger

Located just 2 km from Kuta. Seger is a right reef break, with the occasional left off the peak. A good place when the swell drops. On mid tides and offshore winds this can be a great spot, with short tubes and bowly walls ready for any move you can think of. We definitely had the most fun here during our stay as it was the most consistent wave.

Mawi

Located 20 minutes west of Kuta. On small days this reef break offers a nice peak with short hollow rights and lefts. At 6ft plus, Mawi transforms into a heaving left barrel. At 8-10ft it’s not a spot for the faint hearted and definitely wasn’t for me. It works best from May to September. Mawi can hold any size you’re prepared to surf, just bring your balls!

Are Guling

I myself didn’t get to Are Guling as it wasn’t working at the time. It’s a right hand reef break located on the west side of Kuta. You can access it by both boat and land. This break is apparetly one of the best right hander on the South Coast. Mid to low tides can see the inside section doubling up and barreling. A left hander on the other side of the bay is surfable, though only when its small. Are Guling needs a north-west wind, most common from October to April and can hold 8-10 ft but is surfed best at 4-6ft.

Gerupuk

Another wave I didn’t get to surf unfortunately. It’s a 7km scooter ride to the east of Kuta and is home to five different surf spots which work on various tides, wind and swell combinations. You can pretty much always get a wave at Gerupuk however it does get pretty crowded.
