Red Island (Pulau Merah) surf camp is an un-crowded surf spot, situated in Banyuwangi, East Java (close to Bali). Red Island Surf Camp lays in a secluded, beautiful bay surrounded by mountains and right on the beach. It’s an ideal place to get away, relax and surf. It is the perfect spot to learn to surf and improve your surfing, offering uncrowded, fun sand-bottom waves.

Spend your day lazing in a hammock by the pool, surf fun beach-breaks, jump in a boat to  visit ‘lost paradise’ beach or climb a volcano. There is plenty to do for the adventurous and plenty of relax time for those wanting to just ‘chill’.

Pulau Merah takes its name from the rock islet jutting out in front of the beach (Pulau = island; Merah = red, perhaps referring to the oxidized rock under the vegetation that now covers it). Seclusion is perhaps Pulau Merah’s best asset. As Bali’s surfing spots have largely been inundated by surfers, amateurs and experts seeking less crowded surfing spots now seek out Pulau Merah for its rustic surroundings and its resemblance to the old, pre-tourist Bali.

Q1) How do I get to Red island from Bali ?

Our driver will pick you up at 6am from your accommodation in Bali. It takes around 3 or 4 hours to Gilimanuk from Kuta, followed by a 1 hour ferry to Ketapang and then a 2 hour drive from Ketapang to Red Island. The cost is $70 per person each way. Our driver Heru’s number is: 085238124296, don’t hesitate to contact him if you experience any problems. On the way to Gilimanuk, you will stop for breakfast, and then probably stop at Medewi for a quick surf.

Q2) Is there a malaria risk?

There has been no reported cases of malaria since 2008, when we (ARISA) started operating in the area. We do recommend precautions to be taken to avoid contact with mosquitoes, as they can also carry other dangerous diseases. Cover up at night and use mosquito coils and repellent.

Q3) What is the main religion in the Red Island area?

Indonesia has the biggest moderate Muslim population in the world. The Banyuwangi province in which Red Island is situated is multi religious with Christians,Muslims and Hindus all living together. Bikinis are fine at the beach and in the camp but we do encourage ladies to cover up around the village, merely out of respect for a foreign culture.

Q4) What other activities do you offer at Red Island, other than surf?

  • LOST PARADISE BEACH-Access via traditional Javanese boat

Fishing, snorkeling, hiking and relaxing on the beach are Red Island’s other activities. The camp also has board-games, cards, musical instruments and power for your lap-tops and i-pods, so you’ll never get bored !!

Q5) Is there an internet connection?

YES and it’s faaaaaaast!!!!!

Q6) What boards should i take?

Generally a normal short-board is fine, for the smaller days a fish is recommended. If the swells hits and you want take the boat to surf G-land, a bigger board is definitely advisable.

Q7) What if I don’t have my own surfboard?

We offer surfboards for hire, $20 per day so you don’t even have to worry about bringing a board.

Q8) What if I have dietary requirements?

Just advise staff of any dietary requirements before your trip and we will try our best to meet your needs.

Q9) Is there medical assistance close by in case of an emergency?

YES. There is a medivac helicopter available from Bali for emergency situations. There are also Western Doctors around the bay in G-land and any minor injuries or illnesses can be treated at local pharmacies and by local doctors. There is also the BIMC (an Australian owned) hospital in Bali.

Q10) What is the food like?

AMAZING!!!!! Our meals are all made from fresh, local produce and our chefs dish up the best authentic dishes in Indo. You will definitely leave Red Island feeling healthier than ever!

Q11) Is it ok to drink alcohol at the camp?

Yes, cold beer is readily available, as are local spirits. You are more than welcome to bring your duty free as well.
