Beginner Level 1

Pre-requisites: Tread water for 5 minutes. Float for 5 minutes. Swim 50 metres, without stopping.

This course level covers surfing safety, self rescue skills and riding a small wave on an angle.

  • Types of waves and their dangers
  • Identify rips and how to get out of them
  • Understand beach information and warning signs
  • Identify surf hazards and how to avoid them
  • Choose a safe swimming location

  • Methods to negotiate through the surf with or without craft
  • Methods to come in from the surf with or without craft
  • Apply techniques for survival in the water
  • Use self-rescue techniques
  • Caring for the beach environment

1 sessions (1- 2 hrs each session)
Practice
3 to 10 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Beginner Level 2

Pre-requisites: Tread water for 10 minutes. Float for 10 minutes. Swim 100 metres, without stopping.

Surf safety lesson

  • Understand the surf environment
  • Types of waves and their dangers
  • Be aware of beach information and warning signs
  • Identify surf hazards, including rips, and how to avoid them
  • Demonstrate skills in swimming, bodysurfing, floating and treading water
  • Methods to negotiate through the surf and come in from the surf, with or without craft
  • Implement self-rescue techniques

1 session (2 hrs each session)

Surfing technique skills for riding broken waves:

  • How to look after the surfing environment
  • Identify surfing hazards
  • Choosing a beginners surfboard
  • Waxing, caring, carrying and storing your board
  • Identify types of wetsuits and surf clothing, when to wear these
  • Identify suitable weather conditions for surfing
  • Choose a safe surfing location
  • Choose a safe place to enter the water
  • Negotiate small waves using a variety of techniques
  • Paddle the board in trim
  • Turn the surfboard in a sitting position
  • Wipe-out and dismount techniques

1 session (2 hrs each session)
Practice 6
 to 20 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Surfing Manoeuvres for riding broken waves:

  • Select, catch broken waves and ride waves, going straight to shore, with safety

Beginner Level 3

Pre-requisites: Tread water for 15 minutes. Float for 15 minutes. Swim 150 metres, without stopping.

Surf safety assessment

Understand surf safety, how to self rescue, beginner boards and equipment and ability to ride broken waves going straight to shore.

1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Surf safety Exam Level 3.

Surfing technique skills for riding unbroken waves:

  • Identify surfing hazards
  • Identify suitable weather conditions for surfing
  • Choose a safe surfing location
  • Choose a safe place to enter the water
  • Negotiate small waves using a variety of techniques
  • Paddle the board in trim
  • Turn the surfboard in a sitting position
  • Wipe-out and dismount techniques
  • Identify the types of waves suitable for surfing

1 session (2 hrs each session)
Practice 6
 to 20 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Surfing Manoeuvres for riding unbroken waves:

  • Select, catch and ride waves with safety.
  • Surfing etiquette – drop in rule, snaking, ethics.
  • Surfing manoeuvres: trimming, angle across wave and turning
  • Ride a broken or green wave on an angle (trimming).

3 sessions (2 hours each session)
Practice 9
to 30 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).
1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Surfing Manoeuvres Exam Level 3.

Breath-hold for Surfers

Pre-requisite:  Tread water for 20 minutes. Float for 20 minutes. Swim 200 metres, without stopping.

Breath-hold for Surfers:

This Surf Survival Course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to deal with big surf and wave hold downs, so you can tackle those challenging breaks with greater ease and confidence.

Subjects covered:

  • Stretching body and mind in readiness for the session
  • How to manage urges and senses
  • Visualisation tools and techniques
  • Dealing with extreme circumstances and holding your breath
  • How to avoid panic and stay calm during hold downs
  • Activating our physiological adaptions for sub-aquatic breath holds
  • Recovery breathing between waves
  • Ability to overcome the stress of close-outs and hold-downs.

1-2 sessions (8 hrs of pool session 4hrs and theory session 4hrs per session)
Practice dry breathing and meditation 1 hr per day

In the pool session you will learn:

  • How to breath before you surf.
  • How to overcome the urge to breath using static apnea CO2 and O2 tables.
  • How to activate the “dive response”. Your body starts functioning as a sub-aquatic mammal on a hold down.
  • How to build up a tolerance to high CO2 and low O2 using wet and dry apnea training over time.
  • How to use ”hook breathing” and Freediving swimming techniques to deal with repeated hold downs.
  • How to calm your mind when you have the urge to breath and you’re completely disorientated underwater.1-2 sessions (8 hrs of pool session 4hrs and theory session 4hrs per session)
    Practice in pool (if permitted) and open water (if safe) 1 hr per day or 3hrs per week

Intermediate Level 4

Level 4 Intermediate Surfer:  The surf location, duck diving, choosing waves perform top & bottom turn on forehand. Intermediate skills assessment 1-2 hours.

Pre-requisite:  Tread water for 25 minutes. Float for 25 minutes. Swim 250 metres, without stopping.

Surf safety and surfing assessment level 4

Understand surf safety, how to self rescue, fibre-glass surfboards and equipment and ability to ride unbroken waves on an angle.

1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Surf Safety Exam Level 4.
1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Riding Unbroken Waves Exam Level 4.

Intermediate Level Surfers are able to perform intermediate level surfing manouevres, read the waves and choose the boards to suit personal ability.

  • Access surfing conditions-weather, swell, tides, wind direction, speed
  • Identify how to read waves by understanding different water conditions, wave types,  and their suitability for surfing, left and right waves, wave frequency
  • Identify 5 different types of surf breaks
  • Select a surfing location for the intermediate surfer
  • Choose a suitable place for entering and exiting the water at different surf breaks
  • Identify and use the different types of rips an
  •  Negotiate broken and unbroken waves using the duck dive
  • Identify correct paddling out protocol
  • Choose the correct waves to ride,
  • Identify the correct take off position.
  • Correctly ride the wave by understanding how body weight and speed affect surfing
  • Identify how to turn your board
  • Identify methods to get off the wave
  • How to wipe out safely at the intermediate level

3-10 sessions (2 hrs each session)
Practice 9 to 30 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Surfing Manoeuvres:

  • Trim on forehand and backhand
  • Perform top and bottom turn (fore-hand)

6-10 sessions (2 hrs each session)
Practice 12 to 40 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Intermediate Level 5-6

Level 5-6 Intermediate Level Surfers are able to demonstrate the ability to control the surfboard and link intermediate level surfing manoeuvres in surf up to 5 feet (1.6 metres).

Pre-requisite:  Tread water for 30 minutes. Float for 30 minutes. Swim 300 metres, without stopping.

Surf safety and surfing assessment level 5

Understand surf safety, how to self rescue, fibre-glass surfboards and equipment and ability to duck diving, choosing waves and perform top & bottom turn on forehand.

1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Surf Safety Exam Level 5.
1/2 session (1 hour each session) for Riding Unbroken Waves Exam Level 5.

Level 5 Intermediate Surfer:  Understanding surfboards and performance.  Perform top & bottom turn on forehand and backhand, cutback & reentry on forehand and link manoeuvres.

6-10 sessions (2 hrs each session)
Practice 12 to 40 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

  • Identify how parts of your board affect performance
  • Identify the different types of fins and fin systems
  • Identify surfboard damage
  • Choose a surfboard for the intermediate surfer based on personal style and the surfing conditions
  • Identify surfing safety and assistance clothing

Surfing Manoeuvres 

Top and bottom turn (backhand), Cut-back (forehand), Re-entry (forehand) and Linking manoeuvres.

9-20 sessions (2 hrs each session)
Practice 15 to 50 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).

Level 6 Intermediate Surfer: Experience surfing at different types of surf breaks.  Perform top turn, bottom turn, cutback and reentry on forehand and backhand and successfully link manoeuvres. Experience surfing at a: beach break, reef break, point break and river mouth.

12-20 sessions (2 hrs each session)
Practice 18 to 60 hours (depending on personal sports abilty and previous ocean experience).
